Feel the Beat of Bermuda

No other island offers Bermuda’s unique blend of natural beauty and deep-rooted, globally connected local culture. Get the ultimate island-style cultural immersion here.

People far and wide sing the praises of Bermuda’s pink-sand beaches, but the island’s culture is less well-defined. Maybe that’s because this multi-dimensional cultural scene can’t be captured or appreciated with visuals or words alone – it must be heard, tasted, touched, and truly experienced.

PERSONALISED EXPERIENCES CURATED JUST FOR YOU

Private Island Paradise: Renting a private island is the quintessential way to maximise your island experience. At Hawkins Island near Hamilton Harbour, two luxurious estate homes sleep 16 guests, and a dedicated team including a personal chef offers a range of impeccable personalised services. You’ll find hot tubs, water-view balconies, and gorgeous lounging spaces, but what you won’t find is neighbors.

Perfume Making: Create your signature fragrance at the island’s famous perfumery, Lili Bermuda, in the historic Town of St. George. After an introduction to the art of perfumery, you’ll get to know scent families and their respective olfactory pyramid. Then you’ll assemble your personal perfume formula and go home with a new favourite fragrance.

Baubles & Bubbles: Everything sparkles on the Behind-the-Scenes Studio Champagne Tour with Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery, located on Hamilton’s Front Street. The award-winning local artisan known for elegant, handcrafted pink sand jewellery gives you an exclusive look at her design process. Sip pink Champagne and see how she does it.

Otherworldly Wonders: Venture into an awe-inspiring underground world with Crystal & Fantasy Caves Tours. After descending 88 steps, you’ll marvel at dramatic limestone formations as you stroll a floating boardwalk over a shimmering subterranean lake. Reach out in advance to arrange for a private tour.

Local Flavour: One of the best ways to get a taste of Bermuda is with a private rum tasting and tour with Gosling's, a family business on the island since 1806. The history of rum in Bermuda goes back centuries, with everyone from admirals to pirates participating in the spirited tradition of rum drinking. Try the signature Black Seal blend, which you’ll find all around the island in Dark ‘n Stormy® cocktails, rum swizzles, rum cakes, and even fish chowder.

Magical History Tour: Unravel the mystery and history of Bermuda on a private tour of the National Museum of Bermuda in Royal Naval Dockyard. See sunken treasures like gold bars, jewellery, and other artefacts recovered from local shipwrecks over hundreds of years, and explore Bermuda’s largest fort. Kids can crawl through a lighthouse and giant moray eel at the Museum Playground & Playhouse.

Beauty by Design: Bermuda’s iconic island architecture is rich in style and substance. The pastel hues, geometric white rooftops, and “welcoming arms” are photogenic, but the purposeful sustainable design reflects an island well ahead of its time. (Bermudian roofs are designed to collect rainwater.) Take a private tour with the Bermuda National Trust to see noteworthy examples of brilliant Bermudian architecture.

GOMBEY DANCING: A CULTURAL CELEBRATION

Gombey dancing is much more than entertainment – it’s a deep cultural expression. Bermuda Gombeys are cultural icons drawing from African, West Indian, Native American, and British cultural traditions. With these traditions passed down through the centuries, multi-generational troupes formed on the island connected to certain parishes or families. While other islands have similar traditions, the Bermudian Gombey was recognized as its own distinct art form at the UNESCO Cultural and Conservation Conference in 1970.

Consider hiring a local Gombey troupe for a private performance to witness close-up the swirl of colours and rhythmic, energy-charged drumming and dancing. Get immersed in the culture and connect with these “freedom dances” that honour the struggles of enslavement and celebrate freedom and resilience.

SPIRITED EVENTS & FESTIVALS

The island community comes together for a variety of events and festivals throughout the year. In May, kick off summer on the island with the Bermuda Day Parade, watching colourful floats and Gombey troupes take the streets of Hamilton. In June, celebrate Carnival in Bermuda, a four-day extravaganza featuring parties, music, dancing, and on-the-water fun. In August, Cup Match is a beloved cricket competition and one of the year’s most anticipated events. Part sports competition, island-wide party, and cultural phenomenon, Cup Match embodies a Bermudian tradition that must be experienced to be believed. Plus, watch yachts and other crews participate in ocean sailing races during the bi-annual races: Newport to Bermuda, Marion to Bermuda, Antigua to Bermuda, and Annapolis to Bermuda.
