Bermuda Traveller’s Pledge

Bermuda is proud to have a Traveller’s Pledge, inviting visitors to commit to sustainability while appreciating the island’s rich culture, heritage, and vibrancy. This pledge helps you make the most of your time on the island while leaving the smallest possible impact. Embrace our sustainability pledge with the same enthusiasm we have for our island vibes. Together, we’ll make your stay unforgettable and keep Bermuda beautiful.

  • I will take only photos and leave only ripples and footprints.
  • I will appreciate the resilient yet delicate beauty of nature in my daily explorations.
  • As I wander, I will tread carefully, mindful of every step.
  • I will respect all living things and the people who call Bermuda home.
  • I will choose products and services that are kind to the environment.
  • As I immerse myself in Bermuda’s way of life, I will do my part to preserve the island’s natural beauty.

You can support this pledge by using sustainable transportation, like electric microcars, and dining or shopping at sustainable, eco-conscious businesses across the island.

Discover a Majestic Underwater Migration Without Getting Wet

Throughout March and April, Bermuda’s crystal clear waters come alive with some of the most awe-inspiring creatures on Earth. Every spring, more than 10,000 Humpback whales begin making their way north to cooler waters for the summer months — bringing them just off our pink sand shores. And while it’s possible to catch a glimpse of these beauties from the South Shore clifftops, for a truly unforgettable experience, we recommend a trip on the Bermuda Reef Exploerer’s double-decker glass-bottom boat.

Book a private charter, and it will just be you, your nearest and dearest, and an up-close-and-personal look at the giants of the sea. Of course, that’s not all you’ll see on your private cruise. Keep your eyes peeled for colourful coral reefs, sea turtles, and even an 18th-century shipwreck.

Protect Our Reptiles With the Exclusive Bermuda Turtle Project

Bermuda has long been a home of turtle conservation, with an impressive history dating back to the 17th century. The island is surrounded by pristine seagrass beds, vibrant coral reefs, and crystal-clear waters, creating an idyllic habitat for young green and hawksbill turtles. Because this is such a hotspot for young green turtles, Bermuda is also an ideal destination for studying these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat.

Since 1996, the Bermuda Turtle Project has been dedicated to sea turtle conservation — offering a limited International Course on the Biology and Conservation of Sea Turtles. This two-week course blends fieldwork with in-depth lectures, offering a hands-on approach to studying green turtles and hawksbills. With over 250 students trained, this program is a cornerstone of sea turtle conservation, providing valuable data and fostering a deep love for these magnificent creatures. It emphasises green turtles but covers all species and life stages through case studies and readings. The initiative promotes a deep appreciation for sea turtles while contributing valuable data to ongoing conservation efforts.

Dive Into The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute

For a closer look at Bermuda’s marine wonders, visit the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) in Hamilton. This captivating venue invites you to explore the depths of the ocean from dry land, thanks to its Ocean Discovery Centre. Here, interactive exhibits and a treasure trove of artefacts make ocean conservation an exhilarating adventure. With its blend of myths and mysteries, the Bermuda Triangle exhibit is a standout attraction, while families will delight in the shipwreck displays, simulated dives, and thrilling shark cage experiences.

At the core of BUEI’s mission is a dedication to ocean conservation. Through engaging educational programs and guided tours, visitors gain insight into the critical efforts to protect Bermuda’s marine ecosystems and diverse marine life. Membership at BUEI enhances the experience further, offering benefits such as access to over 350 science centres and museums worldwide, exclusive event invitations, and special BUEI boat trips. It’s a sophisticated blend of learning and adventure, perfect for those keen on deepening their appreciation for Bermuda’s environmental initiatives.

Tend Your Underwater Garden With the Living Reefs Foundation

The Living Reefs Foundation is Bermuda's pioneering organisation focused on coral reef conservation. Since launching our Coral Garden Initiative in 2016, they’ve aimed to create a tourism and conservation partnership to protect the Atlantic's northernmost reefs. Using cutting-edge techniques, they have restored damaged reefs and supported various coral species.

The Living Reef Foundation invites environmental stewards to experience coral gardening — a new scientific approach to coral conservation — recently introduced in Bermuda. You can engage in the coral gardening process through the foundation's "Adopt a Coral Garden" project. This experience begins by naming your garden, which will be immortalised on a personalised plaque anchored to your garden. From here, you can join the team at the Living Reefs Foundation underwater as they plan your coral and follow up with them as they tend to your garden once a month — removing algae and sediment. The Living Reef Foundation encourages you to visit your adopted garden whenever you wish. It will also send you a unique adoption certificate, as well as updates on how your garden is doing.

Learn About the Natural World at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo

The Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ) is dedicated to appreciating and protecting our island environments. BAMZ offers an unparalleled experience for those who love natural beauty but also seek to better understand the world around them. Established in 1926, BAMZ is one of the world’s oldest aquariums, boasting a rich lineage of scientific research and species conservation.

During a visit to the Aquarium, you can see more than 200 species of underwater life from Bermuda's coastal waters, coral reefs, and deep ocean. While here, visit engaging exhibits featuring rescued marine turtles and harbour seals, offering insights into conservation efforts. And, of course, stop by the aquarium’s crown jewel, the 140,000-gallon North Rock Exhibit. This impressive facility captivates with its vibrant corals and impressive marine predators, including sharks and black groupers.
At the Zoo, you'll find lush, naturalistic habitats showcasing over 300 species from oceanic islands, emphasising environmental education and the preservation of endangered animals. Complementing these experiences, the Bermuda Natural History Museum provides a deep dive into the island’s geological and ecological wonders.

Experience the Thrill of the Underwater Hunt

Bermuda is one of the only places where visitors like you can indulge in the memorable and environmentally conscious pursuit of lionfish hunting. The lionfish is an invasive species from the Indo-Pacific that wreaks havoc on the Atlantic Ocean’s delicate marine ecosystem. By signing up for the PADI Lionfish Culling Specialty at any of the local participating dive shops, you can join us in the effort to tip the scales and bring the lionfish population under control, all while contributing to the restoration of coral reefs and marine biodiversity. And once you’ve made your catch, we encourage you to savour your success with a tasty addition to your plate. Lionfish are safe to eat and provide a mild, white, flakey filet. Learn more about experiencing the thrill of the hunt while making a tangible difference in preserving Bermuda's pristine waters here.
