Bermuda Tourism Authority (BTA) and Norwegian Cruise Lines Holdings (NCL) Collaborate to Bring Contemporary Art ti historic St. George's

Local Artist Shanna Hollis Captures Bermuda's History Through Stunning East End Mural Installation

The Bermuda Tourism Authority (BTA) unveiled a new mural in the historic Town of St. George, created in collaboration with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCL). This initiative, part of a broader experience development programme, aims to elevate the visitor experience by integrating contemporary art into high-traffic areas while celebrating Bermuda’s rich history.

Local artist Shanna Hollis was commissioned to design an installation on the Market Wharf Building in the Heart of King’s Square. Her work honours the history of St. George’s, a UNESCO World Heritage site, by capturing the island’s story from the 16th century to the present day. The mural, completed just ahead of Bermuda Art Month, extends Bermuda’s public art attractions for a year-round educational journey for locals and visitors to explore Bermuda’s cultural heritage.

A Modern Tribute to History

The mural is part of a strategic placemaking initiative to ensure that the historic town remains not only a treasure of the past but also a dynamic, engaging space for the present. While the vividly coloured, pop-art design will attract attention and serve as a backdrop for social media-worthy photos, the deeper narrative within the art provides an educational experience. Hollis worked alongside cultural heritage experts Charlotte Andrews and Kristn White to integrate historical elements.

Tashae Thompson, VP Experiences said, “Visitors can connect with Bermuda’s history in a modern context, creating a memorable encounter that resonates with people of all ages. The project supports the National Tourism’s Plan’s innovation pillar that challenges us to think like a visitor and create experiences that satisfy the interests of today’s travellers.”

Of the partnership that birthed the eye-catching installation, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, representative, said: "At Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, we are incredibly proud of our ongoing partnership with the Bermuda Tourism Authority. Bermuda is a destination that holds a special place in our hearts, and we are honored to support the creation of this stunning mural in the historic Town of St. George’s. Art has always been a key element of our brand, and through initiatives like this mural and our Bermuda Breeze activations, we are thrilled to celebrate the beauty and culture of Bermuda with both our guests and the local community."

Supporting Year-Round Tourism and Art Initiatives

This project supports the National Tourism Plan's goal of reducing seasonality in Bermuda’s tourism industry. By offering new attractions like the mural, the initiative aims to encourage more visitors to explore St. George’s between October and March, fostering year-round interest in the town. The installation was unveiled just in time for October’s Art Month, which was promoted in key U.S. markets. Art Month included initiatives to attract art and culture lovers to the island, further enhancing Bermuda's reputation as a cultural destination. Meanwhile, other partners created additional experiences for year-round uptake, ensuring Bermuda offers a diverse range of activities throughout the year.

Elevating the Visitor Experience Through Placemaking

This collaboration with NCL reflects a shared commitment to enhancing the visitor experience through art. By investing in this mural and other planned installations in St. George’s and Dockyard, the BTA is providing unique, immersive experiences that deepen connections with Bermuda’s cultural heritage. These installations demonstrate how contemporary art can transform spaces, not only elevating the aesthetic appeal of highly visited areas but also fostering a deeper understanding of Bermuda’s history. Art serves as a bridge between the past and present, creating engaging and meaningful experiences for all.
