Bermuda Tourism Authority promotes second “Great Bermuda Takeout Day”
Bermuda Tourism Authority (BTA) is encouraging public and corporate support for a second serving of the “Great Bermuda Takeout Day” next week. The food-and-beverage campaign is back on the table just as restaurants and bars are re-tooling their outdoor services for the first time in nearly two months. Local consumer spending is critical to support hundreds of hospitality jobs and uplift Bermuda’s food-service community through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Local restaurants, cafes and other food-and-beverage providers are permitted to offer meals via phone and online orders for pickup or delivery. Now, under Phase 2 of the government’s re-opening programme taking effect today, bars and restaurants are also allowed to serve customers onsite at existing outdoor facilities; those wishing to offer outdoor services for the first time must receive public-health approval and comply with liquor-licensing policies.
The Great Bermuda Takeout Day is slated for Thursday, May 28, following a first effort held April 2 that was successfully supported by local consumers. Through a dedicated resources page on GoToBermuda.com, the BTA is also promoting local food-and-beverage offerings signed up to date, along with online classes and gift cards, essential services, Bermuda-made products for home delivery, and scenic Bermuda landscapes for downloading as videoconferencing backgrounds.
Restaurants now offering alfresco service can sign up to be listed or to add outdoor dining to their existing BTA listing: click here to complete the sign-up form.
“We were proud to see the community turn out for the first Great Bermuda Takeout Day. After weeks of cooking at home during Shelter in Place, we hope Bermuda residents who are ready and able will support food-and-beverage establishments once again—through the takeout and alfresco initiatives,” said BTA Chief Sales & Marketing Officer Victoria Isley.
“Uplifting our restaurant stakeholders and their employees is a critical first step from a tourism perspective,” she added. “As tourism marketers, it’s important we support their viability through this difficult time. Residents and Bermuda fans can expect to see future efforts focused on other categories of businesses, such as retail, golf, hotels and more when the time is right.”
To participate in next Thursday’s Great Bermuda Takeout Day, residents are encouraged to go online or call restaurants to order meals for takeout or delivery. You can also like or share BTA’s social posts on #GreatBermudaTakeoutDay and share your own culinary adventures that day.
“We are so thankful for the efforts of the BTA, the Bermuda government, and all our industry partners in these times of economic hardship and dramatic uncertainty,” said Rosedon Hotel Director Scott Kitson for Huckleberry Restaurant, currently offering takeout meals.
“Promoting the Great Bermuda Takeout and encouraging support of Bermuda’s restaurants is a critical piece of the puzzle in helping our operations survive in the longer term and getting our employees off unemployment,” he said. “Bermuda’s restaurants play a critical part in delivering food to our community and providing a breadth of experience for visitors. Many of us are using our platforms to support the more vulnerable in our community through feeding programmes, and that would be impossible without everyone’s support.”
