Covid-19 Travel Updates

Bermuda has enhanced and elevated its safety and hygiene protocols throughout the island and introduced new programs aimed at digital nomads and their families. Effective October 26, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced Bermuda has been removed from its Level 2 Travel Health Advisory List. The CDC has changed Bermuda’s country classification from “Alert Level 2: Moderate Risk” to “No Travel Health Notice: COVID-19 Risk is Very Low.” Bermuda also earned the Safe Travels Stamp from the World Travel & Tourism Council. 

• Safety Protocols: No more than seven days before departure, visitors to Bermuda must take a PCR COVID-19 test and obtain a negative result; they are also required to complete the Bermuda travel authorisation process online 48 hours before arrival. During their time on island, visitors must take their own temperature daily and report via online application/portal. They are also required to take follow-up COVID-19 tests, administered on day 4, day 8 and day 14 of their stay at easily accessible satellite centres. • OpenClear Covid-19 Screening Service in New York: The BTA and OpenClear have announced a collaboration that offers travelers flying to Bermuda convenient access to an expedited COVID-19 screening service in line with the Government of Bermuda’s health protocols. OpenClear’s COVID-19 screening service is available every Tuesday and Thursday (9AM - 3PM, by appointment only) in midtown, New York City.

The service is designed to help visitors to Bermuda from the New York City area, as well as returning residents of Bermuda, to obtain a COVID-19 test result for the country’s pre-trip Travel Authorization process. To book an appointment visitors and residents must provide proof of travel to the island within seven days (flight number, flight date).   OpenClear will offer three result reporting turnaround times for the COVID-19 screening (12–24 hour turnaround, 24–48 hour turnaround, 48–72 hour turnaround), with prices starting at $199. • Work From Bermuda: In August, Bermuda introduced the Work from Bermuda Certificate, allowing executives and students to work and study remotely from the island in a stunning and worry-free environment. For just a $263 application fee per person, the new incentive allows travelers to move to the island for a year while working remotely. The program also includes the flexibility to travel back and forth seamlessly and to bring the family along as well. There, kids can experience Bermuda’s culture and natural beauty, while still being able to stay on top of their schoolwork back home.

Sporting Events

Fall in Bermuda is filled with exciting, world class sports. Safe Haven for Sporting Events & Groups

Bermuda is proving itself to be a safe haven for sporting events and groups. The Bermuda Championship is the first PGA TOUR event to welcome back live spectators since March. In addition to the Bermuda Championship, the island recently hosted the world’s best sailors for the Bermuda Gold Cup and 2020 Open Match Racing World Championship, as well as the new Rugby World Tens Series league with players from around the globe.

• World Tens Series Rugby Tournament (Oct. 24 – Nov. 7): The first-ever World Tens Series rugby tournament is an international Professional Rugby Tens Tournament featuring eight privately owned teams. Sky Sports, the dominant subscription television sports brand in the United Kingdom and Ireland, has signed a deal to cover the World Tens Series events.
• Bermuda Gold Cup (Oct. 25-30): Taking place on Hamilton Harbour, the Bermuda Gold Cup is the 70th edition competition for the prestigious King Edward VII Gold Cup match racing trophy, featuring 16 teams and some of the top match racers in the world.
• The Bermuda Championship (Oct. 26 – Nov. 1): This official PGA TOUR event at Bermuda's famed Port Royal Golf Course is the first on the PGA TOUR to welcome live spectators. The event features a field of 132 players, 72 holes of stroke play and a purse of US$4 million. The Bermuda Championship will showcase Bermuda to the world thanks to 50 hours of coverage between live and re-airs of Golf Channel broadcasts over the four-day event.  

Infrastructure Enhancements & Hotel News

This year has been significant thanks to a number of major improvements and hotel projects.

• New Airport Terminal: A new terminal at the LF Wade International Airport is set to open December 8, 2020. The ground-up facility has been sustainably designed to minimize environmental impact. It will have several stand-out elements, including a putting green, outdoor terraces with ocean views, and a nature trail. Visitors can also expect lush landscaping, featuring all native and endemic flora compatible with Bermuda’s environment, as well as sustainable water features. Its location further inland and at a higher elevation than the existing terminal will be more resistant to hurricanes.
• St. Regis Bermuda Resort: Opening April 2021 in the UNESCO World Heritage Site town of St. George, St. Regis Bermuda Resort will bring luxury to a corner of the island with an otherwise limited hotel inventory. The opening marks the return of Marriott to Bermuda; the brand has not had a presence on-island since 1999.
• Azura Bermuda: A new boutique hotel and residential enclave on Bermuda’s South Shore, Azura Bermuda soft-launched in 2020. The project will enter its final phase soon, with an expected completion date of Spring 2021.
• Bermudiana Beach Resort, Tapestry Collection: Opening Summer 2021 will be Bermudiana Beach Resort, Tapestry Collection by Hilton – a condo-hotel that will sit on a cliff overlooking pristine pink-sand beach and turquoise waters. This will be the Hilton brand’s first hotel in Bermuda. Amenities include family-friendly and infinity pools, spa, fitness center, and a secluded beach that is accessible via a two-car funicular elevator.

• Tour The Trail: Take a self-guided tour of the African Diaspora Heritage Trail, a collection of historic sites that explore enslavement, from the island’s settlement until Emancipation in 1834. 
• Uncover Island Gems: Explore some of Bermuda's best-kept secrets during a Hidden Gems eco-tour. Led by Ashley Harris, the all-inclusive five-hour excursions visit hidden caves, banyan tree groves and nature preserves teeming with natural life. 
• Dine on Spiny Lobster: From September through March, it’s all about spiny lobster season. Locals wait all summer long for another taste of this island delicacy.
