10 Reasons Sailors Love Bermuda

The island has a long sailing legacy and rich maritime heritage - it was discovered by sailors after all and the Bermuda sloop and Bermuda rig were invented here. In 2024, the best sailors from around the world will gathered in Bermuda for the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix, presented by Apex.

1. Ideal Weather

The island's variable winds, moderate year-round temperatures and sunshine make Bermuda a prime sailing spot any time of year.

2. Newport to Bermuda Race

Since 1906, Bermuda has been the finish line for the Newport Bermuda Race, a prestigious biannual sailing contest that starts in Rhode Island and barrels across the Atlantic Ocean. 

3. Diversity Under the Sea

Bermuda's clear waters are home to coral reefs, diverse marine life (including big-game fish) and more than 350 documented shipwrecks. You can also spot migrating humpback whales in March and April.

4. The Spirit of Bermuda

A replica of a 19th-century sloop, the Spirit of Bermuda, provides sailing experiences for children and travellers around the world.

5. The Bermuda Sloop

The Bermuda sloop was developed in Bermuda in the 17th century. It's notable for its raked masts and triangular sails.

6. The Bermuda Rig

This mast and rigging configuration rose to success, becoming the most widely used configuration in modern sailing.

7. Its convenient location

Bermuda is relatively close to the U.S. by sea. The island is roughly 650 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, which is why Bermuda has long been a popular offshore sailing destination for American East Coast sailors.

8. Sailing the Great Sound 

Bermuda's Great Sound creates a natural amphitheatre ideal for watching sailing events from several viewpoints around the island. In 2017, the island hosted the 35th America's Cup, presented by Louis Vuitton. Sail GP also set its roots in Bermuda having had their second season in 2022 and returning to the island in 2024. 

9. The RBYC

The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club is the third oldest club holding a Royal Warrant outside of the British Isles.

10. A New Marina 

The recently opened marina at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club accommodates superyachts and offers a full range of services at one of the island's premier hotels.
