About Kate | Shipwreck

Come face to face with Kate, the remains of a 200-foot English iron steamer that met her end in 1878 while en route to La Havre, France, from Galveston, TX. She was carrying 3,602 bales of cotton when she struck a reef northwest of Gibbs Hill Lighthouse and began taking on water, forcing her grounding. Almost all of the cotton was recovered, but a gale broke apart the ship, carrying her remains to deeper seas. Now resting in 45 feet of water, Kate’s boilers, engine, propeller shaft and deck winches are visible, while divers can find the propeller itself sitting alone atop a reef in 20 feet of water nearby.
