About Marie Celestia
Slip on a scuba tank and explore one of Bermuda's most famous and mysterious shipwrecks. The Marie Celestia was a paddlewheel steamer pressed into service during the American Civil War as a blockade runner, smuggling guns, ammunition, supplies and food for the South. To confuse the Union, she went by multiple names: Marie Celeste, Mary Celeste and the Bijou among them. In 1864, the Marie Celestia hit a reef and sank in 55 feet of water. Today, divers can see one of her paddlewheel frames standing upright, along with her boilers, anchor and part of the bow.
